Bud Lee Masters the Mod-Lites While in Survival Mode

MINNEAPOLIS  -  After a week off, great racing action resumed at the Minneapolis Raceway with a “Full House” race card featuring 5 IMCA classes and the All-American Towing Mod-Lite series.  103 Drivers took to a fast track that turned dry slick half way into the Features as a stiff southeast breeze persisted throughout the evening.

John McNabb waited until his 2nd year of racing to get his first win and apparently liked it so well that he decided he might as well take 2 checkered flags on the night.  In his Heat race, McNabb started on the outside pole position and rode the advantage to his first ever win at Minneapolis Raceway.  In the Feature, McNabb started on the inside pole position and staked out a lead that he would never relinquish.  Other more experienced drivers hounded McNabb relentlessly for several laps but it came down to rookie Matt Echevarria providing the longest challenge run to McNabb throughout the last half of the race.  Winner of 2 Features in a row, Echevarria came from 3 rows back to push McNabb to the end of the race.  McNabb drove well enough to hold off Echevarria as the two teenagers battled for the checkered flag.  In a tight finish McNabb took the win and claimed his first Feature trophy.  The other Heat race winner was Allen Rice, the current leader for local and State Points in this IMCA class.

Coors Lite IMCA Hobby Stocks

Dennis Berry jumped to an early lead in the Hobby Stocks Feature from his outside pole position and built an early lead.  However, the first of four caution restarts gathered the field back together again and within a lap, Mike Traskowsky had made up ground and passed Berry on the backstretch of the 5th lap.  Traskowsky held off all challengers for several laps through 2 more caution restarts but couldn’t survive the final one as Adam Armstrong passed him on the front stretch with 2 laps remaining.  Armstrong then cruised to victory to win his 5th Feature this season and 6th overall as he continued his domination of the Hobby Stocks.  Winners in the Heat races were Armstrong, GW Fuller, and Brandon Belville.

305 Sprint Cars invade Wakeeney

WAKEENEY, KS (June 12)—The United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars made their first appearance of the season at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, June 12.

Twenty-three sprint cars lined up for the main event, and Colorado’s Mark Walinder jumped out to an early lead, followed by Kirby Hagan and Mike Woodruff. Walinder continued to lead the field at the halfway mark of the 25-lap race with Jason ‘The Hit Man’ Martin close behind. Then on lap 17, Walinder’s motor let go and he went off turn 1, with Martin following him off the track. That handed the lead over to Quinter’s C.J. Johnson on the restart, who was able to hold off a hard charging Luke Cranston for the win. ‘The Rain Man’ Ray Seemann finished third, followed by Kirby Hagan and heat three winner Ty Williams. Zach Blurton and Woodruff won the other 2 heat races.

Salina’s Corey Lagroon made it two in a row in the IMCA Modified feature. ‘The Wichita Lineman’ Randy Wilson took the lead at the drop of the green, trailed by Kyle Rohleder and Nate Moore. Wilson led at the halfway mark of the 20-lap feature, with point leader Lagroon now second and Rohleder third. Lagroon then drove past Wilson on lap 12 to take a lead he would not relinquish and drove on to the Jason Oil winner’s circle. ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick, Rohleder, Wilson, and Mike Petersilie rounded out the top five. Wilson, David Solberg and Rob Day were heat race winners.

Jeff Tubbs of Colby snapped Jason Schoenberger’s five race win streak in the IMCA Stock Car division. Tubbs led all 20 laps to make his way to victory lane. A caution on lap 16 bunched the field for the final time, but Tubbs was up to the challenge to notch the win. Schoenberger finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Ryan Wark, Dustin Daniels, and B.J. Waggoner. Heat race winners were Tubbs and Reagan Sellard.

Wakeeney Speedway Memorial Challenge

WAKEENEY, KS (May 29)—Over 100 race teams gathered at Wakeeney (KS)

Speedway for the annual 2-day Memorial Challenge on Sunday, May 29.

Salina’s Corey Lagroon and Jerry Teel of Hays had a good battle in the IMCA

Modified A-main. Teel led at the drop of the green and continued to lead at the halfway

mark of the 20-lap race with point leader Lagroon right behind. But Lagroon made a

pass on lap 15 to take the lead, and Teel’s night came to an end 2 laps later when he lost

his driveshaft. Lagroon led a hard charging Brendon Gemmill back to green and was

able to hold on for the win. Gemmill finished second, followed by Cody Gearhart,

Jeremy Frenier, and Jason Schoenberger. Heat race winners were Dylan Sherfick,

Shannon Maughlin, Schoenberger, and Lagroon. Frenier and ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill were

first to the checkers in the two B-features.

‘Racin’ Jason Schoenberger of Gorham continued his stronghold in the IMCA

Stock Car division as he won his fifth feature in as many races at the 3/8-mile oval. Pat

Bedore led the first 5 laps before Schoenberger went around Bedore on the outside to

take the lead and drive off for a trip to victory lane. Jay Hachmeister finished in the

runner-up spot, trailed by heat one winner Jeff Tubbs, Bruce Plumisto, and Bedore. Nick

Tubbs won the other heat race.

Hometown driver Clayton Wilson and ‘Flyin’ Bryan Lariviere of Wichita were

the two cars to watch in the 15-lap IMCA Sport Mod A-feature. Wilson took the early

lead from his outside front row starting spot, chased by point leader Chris Heim and Kaid

Calhoon. The red flag flew on lap 8 when Jeremy Sigler barrel-rolled hard down the

backstraight. The car was heavily damaged but Sigler was okay. Wilson led the field

back to green, only to be passed by Lariviere on the following lap. Lariviere was able to

hold off Wilson for his third trip to the Jason Oil winner’s circle at Wakeeney. Heim

finished third, followed by Blaine Walt and Joe Couse. Wilson, Troy Attwood, and

Lariviere were victorious in the three heat races, with Justin Dietz winning a caution

plagued B-main.

The most exciting finish of the night was in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. It

took 4 attempts to finally get the race underway with Tyrel Smith taking the early lead.

Point leader and birthday boy ‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel then took the lead on lap 4.

But Angel Munoz took control on lap 10 and looked to have the 15-lap race in hand. But

heat two winner Adam Armstrong of Beatrice,
