The excitement continued on September 2 at the Salina Speedway with another full night of racing featuring the points championship battles running down to their final month at the lightning fast 3/8 mile. At the end a familiar hot shoe from Delphos found his way to Victory Lane for the second time this year.

Joe Cleveland started a distant eighth in the Belleville Motorsports Modified feature but methodically worked his way up to the top five by the halfway point. The last half of the event was a barn burner as Cleveland, Jeremy Massey, Darrick Klima and Danny Morrison Jr. all engaged in a battle for the lead as the laps wound down. Cleveland found enough at the end to power away and record the win followed by Massey, Morrison, and Klima. Cleveland was also the Hard Charger. Brian Knoell and Massey won the heat races earlier in the evening.

Scot Granzella (91E) powers by Scott Claussen (4) and Geoff Jermark (12J) to take the point in the Coors Light Stock Car Feature

The Coors Light Stock Cars produced another repeat winner as well with Scot Granzella picking up the victory. Scott Claussen held an early lead before Granzella got by and cruised to the win. Claussen finished second with Jason Dove third, Levi Wiggans fourth, and Bob Arnold fifth. Granzella was also the Hard Charger after starting fourth. Arnold won the heat race.

Jesse Levin (11J) works past Grady Fielder (41) to take the lead in the Xtreme Motorsports B-Modified Feature

Repeat winners were the theme for the night as Jesse Levin, although a rookie, posted yet another win on the season in the Xtreme Motorsports B-Modified division. Point leader Josh Rice followed in second with Bob Dauer, Seth Schroer, and Matt Miller in the top 5. Dauer made his return to the track pay off as he was the Hard Charger after starting thirteenth. Jerry Lambeth and Schroer won the heat races.

Bud Lee (21) takes the low line for the lead around Jill Roberg (10J) in Auto House Mod Lite action

The seasoned veteran of racing at the Speedway notched yet another win in the Auto House Mod Lite division. Salina’s Bud Lee raced his way to the win after working past rookie Jill Roberg late in the race. Roberg would finish second followed by Tyler Bradshaw, Dustin Forsberg, and Brian Davidson. Forsberg was the Hard Charger after starting ninth. Chris Unruh and Bradshaw won the heat races.

Wayne Juenemann (4) takes the high line en route to a win in 4 wide Accurate Electric Front Wheel Compact Feature action

Wayne Juenemann strengthened his points lead in the Accurate Electric Front Wheel Compacts with another win. Rookie Eric Unruh finished second with Chris Walker third, Brandon Lobdell fourth, and Branston Arnder fifth. Walker was the Hard Charger after starting eighth. Juenemann and Randy Rice won the heats.

Up next for the Salina Speedway will be Retro Night on Friday, September 9. Fans are encouraged to wear old racing apparel as some older novelties will be racing. It will be a non-points event for Modifieds, B-Modifieds, and Mod

MINNEAPOLIS, KS.   The point leaders in the Coors Lite IMCA Hobby Stocks and Lott Implement IMCA Sport Compacts showed up for the night in different cars due to mechanical issues.  Neither Armstrong or Echevarria looked impressive in their Heat races but when it came down to the business at hand in the Features, they had what was needed to take the checkered flag and set new track records in their respective divisions for season Feature wins.  The new marks were 12 wins for Armstrong and 9 for Echevarria, with Armstrong’s mark also being a new record for all divisions.  Brandon Gray drove his regular car to an impressive win for the new mark in the All-American Towing Mod-Lites.

Another beautiful night for racing despite persistent east winds provided a good showcase for 77 drivers in all six classes to entertain appreciative fans with great racing as local, state, and national point races were impacted by the results of every Feature race.

WAKEENEY, KS (August 28)—Race fans were treated to a couple of exciting feature finishes at the Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, August 28.

The first feature to take to the track was the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Al Emmons led the opening lap before point leader ‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel of Hays took over the top spot on lap 2. The first of 2 cautions waved on lap 3 when Mike Giesenhagen spun, then again on lap 7 when Emmons spun down the frontstraight. Pfannenstiel led the field back to green on both occasions. But on lap 12, Cody Ghumm took the lead, only to have Pfannenstiel pass him on lap 13. But Ghumm regained the lead at the white flag, but Pfannenstiel came back on the final lap and was first to the checkers to make his 4th appearance in the Jason Oil Winner’s Circle this season. Heat two winner Ghumm had to settle for second, followed by Kirk Karst, first heat winner Cody Graham, and Garrett Hager.

Just when fans thought it couldn’t get any better than that, out came the IMCA Stock Cars for their 20-lap feature. It took 3 tries on the start, and officials finally lined the cars up single file, which was successful when the green flag waved. Jason Davis led the opening lap, but was passed on lap 2 by Colby’s Jeff Tubbs. But point leader ‘Racin’ Jason Schoenberger chased down Tubbs and passed him for the lead on lap 7. Schoenberger led at the halfway mark, followed closely by Tubbs. Then the two veteran drivers swapped the lead several times during the final 7 laps with Tubbs edging out Schoenberger at the finish line for his second win this season. Terry Cunningham finished third, followed by Pat Bedore and Davis. Heat race winners were Jeff Tubbs and Eric Kinderknecht.

The IMCA Sport Mod feature saw a new face in victory lane. Jeremy Sigler led the first 2 laps of the 15-lap main event before the lone caution waved when Justin Dietz spun. When the green flag waved once again, hometown driver

Gorby-VictoryLane

With over one hundred cars checked into the pit area the Salina Speedway finally got the biggest show of the year in the books on Friday August 26 with six different winners visiting the Xtreme Motorsports Victory Lane.

For Caney, Kansas driver Gary Gorby, his win in the MidwestDirt Late Model Series 30 lap Main Event couldn’t of come at a better time. Gorby, tied for second in the standings before the evening, started the main event from the last starting position on the grid. Jimmy Segraves took the lead early in the event after picking up the win in the G&G Dozer Dash to lock in the pole position. Segraves then gave way to Delbert Smith before spinning out and being sent to the back. Smith seemed to have the upper hand until Gorby began picking off positions using the top side of the track. The “G Man” made quick work of Smith and sailed home to his first career MDLMS win. Smith finished second, followed by Earl Kinderknecht, Dave Conkwright, and Kelly Dunn. Gorby was also the GRT Motorsports Hard Charger of the Race.

For the second time this season Belleville driver Darrick Klima took home $1,000, this time in the Modified Chassis Challenge by taking off from the outside pole position and never being challenged during the 30 lap feature for the win. The battles of the night occurred from second on back as the top 5 shuffled throughout the feature. In the end Klima crossed the line with ease, followed by Brandon Massey, Jeremy Massey, Joe Cleveland, and Scott Phillips. Jeremy Massey was also the Hard Charger after starting fourteenth. Brandon Blochlinger and Jeremy Massey won the B Features while Klima, Rodger Peck, Kurt Johnston, and Joe Cleveland won the heat races. Thirty two cars checked in for the Inaugural Modified Chassis Challenge sponsored by Belleville Motorsports, 1st Class Chassis, Bills Built Race Cars, and JW Racing.

MINNEAPOLIS, KS.     Faithful readers of these race reports have probably noticed a repetition of drivers names with successive wins in Feature Races.  Whether the cause of these successive wins is great skill, the right setup, luck, or a combination thereof, in four of the six classes the wins just keep on rolling in for several drivers.  On Saturday night four of those win streaks continued with Brandon Blochlinger in the Modifieds (2), Dustin Forsberg in the Mod-Lites (3), Jason Schoenberger in the Stock Cars (3), and Adam Armstrong in the Hobby Stocks (4).  For fans that were looking for something new, John McNabb in the Sport Compacts and Tracy Holloway in the Sportsman Modifieds provided refreshing breaks as both earned their first Feature wins since mid-June.

With another beautiful night for racing, a large crowd witnessed 82 drivers in six classes compete on another fast track and surely were thankful for great track preparation as little dust blew into the grandstands despite persistent east winds.  The fans not only got to witness some tight local points races being waged, but several drivers with State or National IMCA point leads put on a great show for the appreciative crowd.

Lott Implement IMCA Sport Compacts
John McNabb was back after a mechanical failure snuffed out a potential win two weeks ago and got an outside pole position start after a convincing win in the Heat race.  McNabb took the lead from Kevin Hackett on the backstretch of the first lap and started to accumulate a huge lead.  Points leader Matt Echevarria started on the 3rd row and had to earn a second place spot by battling past Allen Rice, Tracy Montague, and Hackett.  By the time Echevarria moved into second position halfway into the race, McNabb had built close to a ½ lap lead over the field.  Echevarria made up about half the distance over the remaining 8 laps, but McNabb drove equally well and this time around wasn’t betrayed by a mechanical failure to take his 2nd win of the season and career.

T&R Dirt Construction IMCA Sportsman Modifieds
Two early cautions whittled away the two pole position drivers in this Feature putting  Tracy Holloway in the advantage to lead off the second restart.  Holloway then jumped on a large lead that he wouldn’t relinquish despite two more caution restarts in the race.  Local, State and National IMCA points leader, Bryan Lariviere, battled his way up from a 6th row starting position and gained the second position after five laps.  But before he could gain much ground on Holloway, Lariviere lost quite a bit of sheet metal and was put to the back of the pack on a caution. That left Dan Smith, Tyler Frye, and Jacob Krone to duke it out for second position with Smith prevailing to finish behind Holloway in this Feature.  Lariviere started the night with a local 9 point lead over Frye which was reduced to 4 in this competition.  The Heat race winners were Holloway, Josh Rice, and Smith.

HAYS, KS (August 19)—Early evening thundershowers forced track officials at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, to cancel the race program Friday evening, August 19.

STOCKTON, KS (August 18)—Fair champions in four divisions were crowned Thursday evening, August 18, at Rooks County Speedway in Stockton, KS. Points accumulated for both Wednesday and Thursday were totaled to determine the champions.

The first one to claim the crown was Jeromy Wagner of Kensington. After finishing second to G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller on Wednesday night, Wagner took the lead at the drop of the green and led all 12 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Jason McIntyre finished second, followed by Jacob Crowell, Fuller, and Rick Maynard. Heat race winners were Fuller and Wagoner.

‘Flyin’ Bryan Lariviere of Wichita won his second IMCA Sport Mod feature in a row at Stockton to win the fair title. Heat one winner Tracy Holloway led the opening lap before second heat winner Lariviere drove past and led the remaining 14 laps on the ½-mile oval for his 30th feature win of the season in his quest for a national championship. Tanner Portenier, Holloway, Tyler Sutton and Joe Couse rounded out the top five.

Hometown fans did have one driver claim a fair title. Adam Balthazor led the opening lap of the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature before the only caution flag during the four feature events waved on lap 2 when Josh ‘The Hammer’ Hudson came to a stop in turn 4. Balthazor led the field back to green, but Jay Hachmeister took the lead on lap 3, but that was short lived as Balthazor regained the lead on lap 5 and held on for the feature win. Jason Davis finished second, with Hachmeister, Tyler Hahn and Hudson completing the top five. The two heat race winners were Dustin McClurg and Terry Cunningham.

Four-time IMCA Modified national champion David Murray Jr. of Oberlin took advantage of

STOCKTON, KS (August 17)—Over 50 drivers converged on Rooks County Speedway Wednesday evening, August 17, for the first of 2 nights of racing action during the Rooks County Fair.

Beloit’s Tim Watts dominated the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature. Watts took advantage of his pole starting position to take the lead at the drop of the green and never looked back. Watts used the dry-slick track to his advantage as he pulled away to a straightaway lead by the halfway mark, with ‘The Wichita Wrangler’ Randy Wilson and 4-time national champion David Murray Jr. in a battle for second. The last caution waved with 4 laps to go after Joe McDole spun, giving the field one last shot at Watts. Murray, running second at the time of the caution, chased Watts but could not get close enough to make a pass and had to settle for second. Wilson finished third, followed by ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick and Jeremy Frenier. Heat race winners were Murray and Cody Gearhart.

Hometown driver ‘The Taz Man’ Tyler Hahn was victorious in the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. Jay Hachmeister led the first 2 laps, then after a lap 2 caution, Hahn drove past Hachmeister to take the lead on lap 3. A couple more cautions kept the field close, but Hahn was up to the challenge on the big ½-mile and was first to the checkers. ‘The Hammer’ Josh Hudson, Adam Balthazor, Dustin McClurg, and Hachmeister rounded out the top five. Jason Schoenberger and Hahn won the two heat races.

National champion contender ‘Flyin’ Bryan Lariviere of Wichita picked up an important win in the 15-lap IMCA Sport Mod

WAKEENEY, KS (August 14)—Angel Munoz of Lamar, CO, and Colby’s Nick Tubbs made their way to the Jason Oil Winner’s Circle at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, August 14, for the first time this season.

Heat 2 winner Jacob Crowell led the opening lap of the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature before heat one victor Jeromy Wagner took over the top spot on lap 2. After a lap 5 caution, Wagner led the field back to green, but Munoz passed Wagner on lap 6 to take a lead he would not relinquish. Cody Ghumm won the battle for second, followed by point leader ‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel, Wagner, and Cody Graham.

Norton’s Jason Davis charged to the lead in the IMCA Stock Car main event and led the first 3 laps of the 20-lap event. But Nick Tubbs took the lead on lap 4 and held on through 3 caution periods for his first trip to victory lane. The final caution set up a green-white-checkered finish but ‘Spiderman’ Tubbs was able to hold off Davis and brother Jeff Tubbs for the win. Point leader ‘Racin’ Jason Schoenberger and Bruce Plumisto finished fourth and fifth. Plumisto and Davis were heat race winners.

It was a family affair in the IMCA Modified A-feature as the Sherfick brothers from Wakeeney battled it out for the win. ‘Dynamite Dylan’ led the first 2 laps before older brother Travis ‘The Terminator’ took control. Travis was able to hold off Dylan the remaining distance for his second win in a row at his hometown track. ‘The Wichita Wrangler’ Randy Wilson was able to fend off 4-time national champion David Murray Jr. for third, with John Fose rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Travis Sherfick, ‘Gentleman’ Jerry Phillips, and Wilson, with Jason Schoenberger first to the line in the B-feature.

The 15-lap IMCA Sport Mod feature got off to an ugly start to say the least. In turn 2 on the first lap, 4 cars tangled, eliminating Clayton Wilson, Jeffrey Kerns and Bret Conness. On the restart, a 6 car melee ensued on the frontstraight, ending the night for Blaine Walt, Brendon Damon, Clay Sellard, Austin Walker, Tanner Portenier and Chris Heim. Track officials then cut the main event to 12 laps with 6 cars still running. Four different drivers led the first four laps with Kenny Schmidt leading lap one before giving way to Trenton Kleweno on lap 2. On the following lap, Brian Conness took the top spot, then point leader and heat two winner ‘Flyin’ Bryan Lariviere took control and led the remaining distance for the win, his 7th of the season at Wakeeney. Mike Appel, heat one winner Conness, Schmidt, and Justin Dietz completed the top five.

It was ‘Fan Appreciation Night’ with $1.00 hot dogs, soft drinks and beers, and track t-shirts were just $10.00. It was also ‘Back to School Night’ sponsored by Miner Family Dentistry in Hays. They handed out dental supplies to the first 300 fans through the gate. Don Damon also added $100 to third place money in all 4 features.

A make up race from the July 31st rainout will be held on Sunday, August 28, at 6:00 p.m. with the regular 4 divisions in action.

Also, Late Models have been added to the September 18 race date.
